PLAN FOR DAIRYING

SOCIALISTIC TENDENCIES MR. GOODFELLOW'S VIEW REPLY TO DR. CAMPBELL Suggestions v.v>re made by Mr. W. Good follow last week in his criticism of the Dairy Industry Commission's report that some of its allegedly socialistic tendencies emanated from Dr. R. M. Campbell, of the staff of the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. Dr. Campbell telegraphed to Mr. Goodfellow with regard to the latter's references to Stalin and Roosevelt, and also refuting the statement, that he held American university degrees. Mr. Goodfellow has now sent the following letter to Dr. Campbell:— "I accept your assurance that your degrees were not obtained in the United States, but I understand that you did, as a matter of fact, attend Cornell University in the State of New York. Obviously, when sudying there, you absorbed ideas which gave you a flair for tho socialisation of agriculture. "With regard to my reference to Stalin and Roosevelt, I am informed that you took an active part in drafting the bill providing for the establishment of a Supreme Council, which is tantamount to the establishment of a socialistic dictatorship." Mr. Goodfellow quotes a statement by Dr. Can\pbell that "generally tho development and prospects sketched in these pages point to a need, of a degree that is not defined, for the socialisation of agriculture." He also cites a sentence from a speech made by Dr. Campbell before the Wellington Philosophical Society: "The onus is on us to prove that the Communists of Russia are wrong." "This statement," says Mr. Goodfellow, "adds to my conviction that you favour a dictatorship, and these facts appear to confirm the commonlyreported impression that you hold strong socialistic views. "Your reference to my press propaganda is not quite fair. New Zealand, as yet, is a democratic country and. as a representative citizen, I have a perfect right, indeed, possibly a duty, to express my opinion on matters which I consider bo vitally affect the future welfare of our country. "Your repudiation of Stalin and Roosevelt does not do you credit. You claim to be a planner and, I understand, a socialist. Why object to being bracketed with other world-famous men of your cult? Some of us who have had to study world conditions in our business strongly disagree with your views. We believe the socialisation of agriculture will reduce the standard of living of the whole community, farmers included, to that of a Central European state. In short, your remedy is a dangerous experiment which is unlikely to be successful. "It is a fact, as I can testify from personal experience, that our New Zealand dairy farmers, their methods and their factories, are up-to-date and second in that respect to those of no other country. Therefore, why not try the socialisation experiment on some -of our ' secondary industries P They , would probably be more responsive, the ;£xjseMment less costly in event of failure and, in such event, you would in reality be doing the country some real service bj T reducing inefficiency."
