RATES AND ROADING
Sir, —I would like to heartily agree with Mr. Mellsoj) that "the most, unjust tax in New Zealand is rales on farm lands to make roads lor all to use." I have lived on one farm for 40 years and have paid in road rates over £4O0 —yet the only access to mv property is a clay road that is impassable during three months in the year. When ] point this fact out to the County Council, and suggest that I should get a little benefit from this £4OO, I am told it is used for "maintaining roads'' (for others' use), and that my only hope of having a road I can use in the winter is by paying an additional tax. We spnd and pay our members of Parliament to look after our interests — how long is it going to be before they do so? Ivor Barbihai,!,.
