UNSUITABLE LICENSEE
TRADING AFTER HOURS DEFENDANT TO LEAVE HOTEL "The facts before me lead me to suppose that defendant is quite unsuited to hold a licence," said Mr. Wyveru Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday, when the licensee of the Aurora / Hotel, William Henry Borhara, appeared for sentence on a charge of selling liquor after hours on September 14. Sentence had been deferred by the magistrate on Friday to allow for the production of the register of licences. Mr. Conlan, who appeared for defendant, said that Borham had had no previous experience of liotelkeeping before taking over the licence in August, 1933. He realised now that it ■would be better if he disposed of the lease he'had entered into, and he proposed to take immediate steps to do so. Counsel asked, however, that since Borham intended to give up hotelkeeping, he should be given the opportunity to hand over to any proposed licensee a licence that was not endorsed. "Borham must get out of the house," Baid Mr. Wilson. "The police found the hotel full of men who had no right to be there, and defendant must have been aware of what was going on. Yesterday I fully intended to endorse the licence, but since I am assured defendant is leaving the hotel, I shall not do so. It is a house which, because of its surroundings, requires careful conduct." / Mr. Wilson said he would postpone sentence again to November 2, so that arrangements for the disposal of the lease could be made.
