/ ■ AUCKLAND PILOT'S FATE CRASH IN SOUTHERN ITALY FIRE COMPLETES TRAGEDY A double tragedy marred the Centenary air race yesterday when Flying-Officer H. D. Gilman, of Auckland, and his British companion, Mr. J. K. C. Baines, who was known in New Zealand flying circles, crashed in ? a mountainous region of Southern Italy. • . i The machine suddenly went into a nose-dive at a height of 5000 ft and burst into flames when it struck the ground. Both occupants were dead when the fire had died down sufficiently to allow of a search of the wreckage being made. The remains of the two airmen were reverently cared for awaiting the arrival of relatives to identify and claim them.
