BLACK'S ROMANCE

PROPOSAL TO ACTBESS ACCEPTANCE YESTERDAY LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright , (Received October 23 , 6.55 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 23 The Daily Mail states that Mr. T. Campbell Black, Mr. C. W. A. Scott's co-pilot in the Centenary air race, proposed marriage to a film actress, Miss Florence Desmond, well-known for her clever imitations, a few hours before his departure from Mildenhall. Miss Desmond waited at Nortlicliffe House all night in order to telephone to Mr. Black immediately he arrived in Melbourne her acceptance of his proposal, which was made to her in the bleak hours of the morning during the last-minute preparations at Mildenhall. " Our romance has been kept a very close secret/' says Miss Desmond, " 1 first met Campbell while I was on a holiday at Le Touquet, France, this year. After that we were almost inseparable. "I knew the dangers of this flight and when Campbell proposed I wanted to say 'yes' there and then, but I knew how he had set his heart on winning this race with Mr. Scott and I felt it would help him more if I delayed giving my answer until they had succeeded. So I told him: 'lf you win this race I will give you my answer.' "
