RELIEF WORK TROUBLE
MEN AT HIKURANGI PAY FOR COAL PROSPECTING [bt telegraph—own correspondent] WHATTG-AREI, Tuesday A stop-work meeting at Hikurangi this morning was attended by all the unemployed men of the township, numbering nearly 100, who have been engaged on relief work, and it was decided to cease work. Thirty-two of the men have been employed prospecting for coal on the Hikurangi Coal Company's property and have been receiving 37s 6d a week under the No. 5 scheme, and it was intended that the men would be re-em-ployed by the company immediately coal was produced. It is understood the men demand a wage of 10s a day from tl.e Unemployment Board, in lieu of the 37s 6d a week for a five-day week. These men have not been subjected to the stand-down week. The men employed by the Hikurangi Town Board and the Whangarei County Council at Hikurangi have also ceased work in sympathy with the men who have been coal prospecting. A further meeting of the men is to be held to discuss the position.
