NELSON'S CENTENARY
MAYOR LOOKING FORWARD —_ PROPOSED MEMORIAL HALL ■ ' The centenary of Nelson —the first South Island settlement—will fall in February, 1942. The question of the - commemoration of the event has been ' receiving the attention of the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Moffali At the last meet- J ing of the City Council the following resolution was carried on hiii motion: "That when the water supply proposalsare submitted to a poll of the rate- ■_ r payers a proposal for an extension of the Municipal Buildings, including » new gas showroom and an Early Settlers' Memorial Hall, at a cost of about £BOOO, be also submitted for • approval." Mr. Moffatt said that the centenary : of Nelson was not so very far away, and he hoped to have the early settlers hall in commission by then., Mr. Russell stated that when th« Unemployment Commissioner was M _ Nelson he was asked whether the sub- j sidy would be extended to such work, , and he replied that favourable consideration would probably be given, to the ~ question. The motion was opposed by one i councillor, on the ground that the settlers' memorial ought to be built qat of public subscription. The Mayor said that Dr. Bett had promised to present his flue collection of early Nelson records to the city if a fireproof building was provided to hous# it.
