THRESHER SHARK
CAUGHT OFF RANGITOTO AN UNUSUAL CAPTURE ! Something akin to big game fishing was enjoyed yesterday by two young men, Messrs. E. Hart and G. Green, who caught a small thresher shark'; near the Rangitoto Beacon, practically within the harbour limits. The thresher shark is actually a game fish and. although reremai and other varieties of, shark are often caught in the harbour or the gulf, the presence of a shark of this species so close in-shore is somewhat of a rarity. The two young men. who had been spending the week-end at Pangitoto,!were fishing from a dinghy for schnapper, and caught the thresher shark on, an ordinary hand-line and schnapper hook. It d]d not put up any greatfight, and was successfully gaffed when it was brought to the surface. It was nearly 6ft. in length, the powerful threshing tail being nearly 2jt. The same fishermen caught a large stingray on Sunday, while a. short time ago they landed a fairly large octoptu.. from the Rangitoto jetty. : .>;
