EVENTS AT EPSOM

SUCCESS OF NELL YOLO | remarkable performance F. J. SMITH WINS THE DOUBLE Very rarely if ever does a racecourse band join with: the public in recognition of a sterling performance on the part of a horse, yet the strains of "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" were heard when Nell Volo returned to the birdcage after winning the Hillsborough Handicap for trotters ai> Alexandra Park, Epsom, yesterday afternoon. V Driven by F. J. Smith, the imported mare was a very hot favourite. She lost a lot of ground at the start and with a mile to. go her task of catching the leader, Parrish Belle, looked hopeless, as she was a furlong behind. Finishing with a brilliant run over the last halfmile Nell Volo reached the judge two lengths to the good. Both driver and mare were accorded one of the finest receptions seen at Epsom for a long time. In addition to this success, F. J. Smith, the Takanini trainer, trained and drove Worthy Light and Wrecker, winners respectively of the Labour Pay and Remuera Handicaps, the two principal races on the programme. These horses had won the two chief races on the first day in the reverse order. There was an attendance of just ou , 10,000, and very keen racing was wit- / nessed on a track in good order, the weather being fine, although a little dull late in the afternoon. The sum of £19,962 5s was handled by the totalisator, compared with £25,833 5s last year, a decrease of £5871. The total for the meeting was £36,043 5s compared with £44,467, a decrease of £8423 los.
