OFFICERS AND SAILORS
EQUALITY ON THE TURF INCIDENT AT PERTH RACES Tho maxim that, on tho turf and under tho turf all men are equal, was demonstrated at tho -recent Hunt Club races at Perth, where officers and men from the warship Sussex, then in port, were tho guests of tho club in the enclosure reserved for committeemen, their wives and friends. There were many officers in mufti, and ono lone sailor from the lo\\ei deck in uniform. Tho sailor was having a great time, and, after backing several winners, two of tho officers from his vessel, who were greatly surprised that he should be among tho fashionable crowd in tho enclosure, approached The sailor was unperturbed. Saluting smartly, he said:—"A great day, sir, I'm backing winners. n Ihon ho a u elect, by way of explaining his presence, "1 am hero as the guest of a committeeman, sir." Turning to a local sportsman, with whom ho had been conversing,_ an officer laughingly remarked: ''By jo\e, 1 hope you aro a committeeman, too. it would bo too av/ful jf one of our stokers was invited here by a committeeman, and we officers by only au ordinary member."
