DEFEAT OF SAVIDAN
CARNIVAL AT WHANCAREJ [by telegh^vph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI. Monday The Whangarei Agricnltural and Pastoral Society's gymkhana was concluded to-day at Kensingtou Park. There was an attendance of approximately 7000. . A feature of the amateur athl-etic events was the splendid performances in the twomils race of A. R. Wilson, of Whangarei, provincial mile champion, and -T._W. Sayidan. Dominion, three-mile champion- Xiie race, after the fir3t mile, was obviou«iy one between the two scratch men. From the commencement Wilson was content to remain a couple of feet behind Savidan. and he kept, this position until halfway round th« last lap. when both had well passed the limit, man. At this stage Wilson drew level with Savidan and they entered the straight on equal terms. Wilson finally won by 10ft., ahead of Savidan in tho excellent time at 9m 27 2-53. , , attraction was an exhibition ot javelin-throwing by J. Gillespie, ol Auckland. who made the best throw ot hia career, measuring 158 ft 4m, beating his previous best throw by Ift.
