STORY OF A LAMP
CYCLIST'S " NEW EXCUSE " ROLLING DOWN A GORGE Stating that his lamp had dropped off and rolled down a steep gully in the Pakaia Gorge, a cyclist in the Magistrate's Court in Christchurch a few days ago produced a new excuse for riding without a light at night. Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., convicted him and ordered him to pay costs. The defendant said that he left Christchurch early one morning for a cycling trip of 140 miles. When he was going "through the Itakaia Gorge, his lamp dropped off and rolled down a gully, which was too steep for him to descend. He decided to push on and try to get home before dark, but a head wind delayed him so that he was overtaken by darkness before he could reach Christchurch. He added that on such trips he usually took two lamps. The Magistrate: I must say it is a new excuse, but it is expecting a good deal of me to believe that story about the lamp.
