Alexander, M.L.C., was a passenger for Wellington by train yesterday afternoon. Mr. Justice Smith and Mrs. Smith arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. They are at the Hotel Cargenjff Paymaster-Lieutenant C. E. Joyj| R.N., assistant to the naval secretary,' 4 Wellington, is retiring after 36 years in the service. Jlr. E. A. Batt has been re-elected chairman of the executive of the Auto- i mobile Association, Wellington. This is his sixth successive term in that office. Lieutenant-Commissioner F. Adams, recently appointed territorial commander of the Salvation Army in. New Zealand, will arrive in the Dominion early in December. Mr. W. E. Parry, Mr. A. S. Richards, Mr. W. J. Jordan, Mr. W. "W. Massey, Mr. H". G. R. Mason, Mr. A. : Harris, Mr. A. J. Stallwor+hy, Mr. A." E. Ansell and Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P.'s, were passengers for Wellington by the limited express last evening. . Mr. J. E. Nichol, who has been col-' i lector of customs at Napier for the past year, and was previously examining officer at Invercargill, has been ap- ! pointed collector of customs at Dunedin to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. B. Anderson some months ago. Mr. A. Spencer, president of the Auckland Employers' Association, left by the limited express last evening to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers' Federation in Wellington to-morrow. He will be joined by Mr. J. Lowe, who wiil go south this evening. Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Godley and Lady Godley are passengers from England on the Rangitiki, which is due at _ Auckland to-night. They are on their way to attend the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. A civic reception will be accorded to them at the Town Hall to-morrow. Dr. H. F. McNickle, who has been appointed resident surgical officer at the Wellington Hospital, and Mrs. McNickle will arrive at Auckland bv the Marama from Sydney this marning. Dr. McNickle's last appointment m England was resident surgical officer at the Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital. Mrs. McNickle was formerly Mia Kathleen Bews, of Auckland.
