SERVICE TO METHODISM
58 YEARS A LAY PREACHER [from OCR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday " An old Waikato resident, Mr. \Yil* liam Harris, of Hamilton East, has retired as a lay preacher olr the Methodist Church after 59 years' service. Mr. Harris was born in St. Ives, Cornwall, in 1855, and became a lay preacher in the Methodist Church in Cornwall in 1875. Five years later he came to New Zealand and took up farming at Te Kowhai, in the Waikato, where lie remained for 40 years. Mr. Harris was a member of the Newcastle Road Board and tho.Te Kowhai School Committee. He continued his work as a lay preacher, and when he. had served foi* 50 years he was presented with a special certificate by the New Zealand Methodist Conference in recognition of the fact. Mr. Harris cam® to Hamilton 14 years ago.
