GAS WARFARE
PRECAUTIONS IN BRITAIN DEFENCE COMMITTEE'S PLANS LONDON. Oct. 9 The Committee of Imperial Defence has drawn up plans to be carried out in the event of gas warfare. In giving this information the Weekly Dispatch says the action has not been taken owing to a fear of early hostilities, but to bring Britain into line with other countries, where the people know the procedure in the event of a gas attack. The plans aim at preventing panic and accordingly they impress on the controllers of lighting services the necessity of maintaining those services. Part of each plant should be bombproof, so that a skeleton staff could continue working. The building of huge gas-proof and bomb-proof underground halls is also suggested. As it would be impossible to evacuate London and other large cities, the committee is concentrating on decontaminating affected areas, where lire brigades, using chemicals, would assist. Municipalities will be urged to 'organise and drill townspeople, and also to survey likely places for shelter.
