PERENNIAL RYEGRASS

. o Southern farmers still disagree on the question of ryegrass (states a correspondent), and although a larger urea of tho true perennial Hawke's Bay strain is being sown down in Southland each year, there are many pastoralists who consider that the Hajvke's Bay strain has no advantages, while it has two definito disadvantages, in unpalatability and poor seeel fertilisation. The first question is fairly easily disposed of, as it has been proved on a number of farms that although the stock do not find ,the true perennial strain as palatable as pseudo-perennial or Italian rye, they graze off it readily, except for a short time after being changed from a paddock of a poorer strain. Then the northern variety commences to assert its superiority for its f razing* capacity in Southland is much igher than the local variety.
