THE BUTTER MARKET
Sir, —As your correspondent "Goodwill" states, "Every picture tells a story," but ofttimes the whole story is not heeded by those who do not want to hear it. Here is the full story in figures of the present butter position: —lmports into United Kingdom for the nine months ended September 30: For 1934, 384,251 tons; for 1933, 338,855 tons; for 1932, 318.270 tons. To show that New Zealand is not the only country affected, I quote prices current this year and last, as follows: — Oct. 12 Oct. 13 1931 1933 New Zealand .. .. 64/66 96/100 Baltic 58/00 88/91 The butter market has fallen about six weeks earlier than last season, due to heavier arrivals and consequently heavier stocks, which must be cleared before the new season's Australian and New Zealand butter* arrives. To be consistent your correspondent should have quoted the position of cheese, the f.o.b. sales of which are also subject to control. An examination of the prices current on the London market during tho past few weeks shows that cheese prices have advanced and are. now close to last year's values. How does "Goodwill" explain this in tho face of his attitude on the butter position? It seems to me that "Goodwill" must be one of the merchants whose wings have been clipped; Co-operative.
