EARLY STUD STOCK
PIONEER'S RECOLLECTIONS RESIDENT OF MORRINSVILLE Among the many old residents who will take part in the jubilee celebrations of Morrinsville next week is Mr. F. Marshall, the first Mayor of the town. Mr. Marshall has been a resident of Morrinsville for over half a century and has travelled the world, being well known in his early days in connection with the transport of blood stock from one country to the other. A treasured paper in Mr. Marshall's possession is a copy of the New Zealand Herald of February 25, 1884, in which the following appears:—"By the ship Brenhilda, which arrived from London yesterday, the Auckland Stud Company have received a further valuable addition to their stock of prize sheep and bulls. The consignment consists of 35 ewes and 10 rams of the Shropshire Downs breed. A few days before the arrival of the vessel the stock was added to in the shape of six lambs, in addition to the sheep there are three Hereford bulls and one Jersey bull on board The animals have all arrived in the most perfect order possible and without the loss of a head, a fact that reflects highly upon Mr. Marshall, who had charge of the stock during the passage, and also upon the officers, who rendered Mr. Marshall every possible and most willing assistance." Mr. Marshall remembers the trip very well and is very proud of the fact that not one of his charges was lost during the voyage, which was a particularly fast one of 94 days. The ship was a splendid type of boat, and the stock fared very well. The Jersey bull mentioned was one of the first to be brought to New Zealand and was to the order of Messrs. T. and R. Morrin, of Morrinsville. Mr. Marshall said he brought the bull from Jersey.
