THE CONTROL ACTS

VOICE OF PRODUCERS NO PROVISION MADE The fact that primary producers are not given an opportunity of voting for the continuance or otherwise of export control Acts was pointed out in a letter from Mr. Gainor Jackson received by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at its meeting yesterday. The communication mentioned the Dairy Produce Export Control Act, the Fruit Control Act and the Honey Export Control Act, which were brought into operation by proclamations following favourable polls of the producers concerned, and which had been in force for 11, 10 and 10 years respectively. "During this time the personnel of the several classes of producers affected by the Acts will have altered considerably," stated the letter. "Further, there is now a substantial body of opinion among primary producers which believes the various export control Acts have not endured to the benefit either of the industries concerned or of the country as a whole. Although the introduction of these Acts was based on the democratic principle of a referendum of producers concerned, no provision exists for any future referendum of producers or export interests." Mr. Jackson suggested the chamber should urge the provision of opportunity for voting for the continuance or otherwise of the Acts at intervals of, say, five years. It was decided to request the Associated Chambers of Commerce to set up a sub-committeo to consider the whole subject of export control.
