GEYSER ACTIVITY

DISPLAYS AT ROTORUA COMING ROYAL VISIT IMPROVING WHAKAREWAREWA [ by telegraph —OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday The Cauldron in the Government Heserve at Whakarowarewa ,became suddenly active this afternoon and played for 1 40 minutes, sending up shots to 10ft. This is a good indication that. Pohutu will play, The geysers Waikorohihi and Waikite are also abnormally active, YSaikite sending up shots of from 70 to 80ft. The R'hemo undertaken by the beautifying committee at Whakarewarewa is now nearing, completion. The planting of native and other trees has been successfully carried out. The major part of the work is the erection of about 25 chains of ornamental carved fencing, which extends from the bridge to tho meeting house and tho Government Reserve. Heavy posts, carved with a figure, spaced eight feet apart, give a typical Maori appearance. Nearly 200 of these figures have been erected. The work at the main entrance at the bridge was completed to-day. The cost of all these improvements has been found from taxation on the guiding fees of one penny a person on each reserve. It is ex pee tod that a large gathering of natives will be in the pa during the Duke of Gloucester's visit. Dofinito arrangements will not be made until the arrival on Saturday of tho secretary to the Minister of Native Affairs. LEVEL OP THE LAKE BOROUGH COUNCIL'S VIEWS [by telegraph—own correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday The opinion expressed by the Public Works geologist, in a report to the department, that the level of Lake ltotorua had no connection with thermal activity, was discussed at a meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council, last night. "We, as laymen, are supposed to know nothing about it, but we can believe what we see," said the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson. His remark was supported by members of the council, who said a very definite connection existed between the higher lake level and the recent increased thermal activity. It was decided to writo to the head office of the department urging that it should not lose sight of the necessity of raising the lake level.
