INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS
CHIEF AUCKLAND POST appointment announced MR. A. BAIN, OF TARANAKI The appointment of Mr. A. Bam, chief insfiector of schools in the Taranaki district, to a a similar position at Auckland in succession to the late Mr. W. G. Blackie, was notified by the Education Department to the Auckland Education Board at its meeting yesterday. Mr. Bain will commence his duties in February. Since Mr. Btackie's sudden death on an Auckland golf course last May Mr. M. Priestley has been acting temporarilv as chief inspector. At yesterday s meeting Mr. Priestley, who has been an inspector at Auckland for the past 24 Years, announced his intention o retirir> from the service at the end ot February. He has been in the education service for 41 years. _ Mr. Bain has been senior inspector of schools in the Taranaki e^ district for the past two years. Prior to jroinc to Taranaki he was tor two years acting-senior inspector for the education district, with headquarters a Dunedin. Previously he spent 10 years in the Oiago district as a stall insp^ctor* " Bora in Invercargili in 1884. _ Mr. Bain is a son of Mr. Andrew Bam, a former Mayor of Invercargili. He _ wa f educated at the Southland Boys' High School and after taking the B.A. degree at Otago University, he became a pupil teacher at Invercargili. In 1906 he was appointed first assistant at the Oamaru School. After filling a similar position in Invercargili from 1907 to 1913, he became headmaster of the Geraldine District High School, and, in 1918, headmaster of the Waimate District' High School. In 1920 he was appointed inspector of schools in the Otago district.
