SHOP IMPROVEMENTS
KARANGAHAPE ROAD SCHEME MODERNISING PROPOSED A scheme" for the general improvement of shop-fronts "in Karangahape Road is suggested in the report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society next week. It was stated that several landlords who had been approached had signified their intention of co-operating, and the City Council had decided to spend £4OOO on the renovation of 20 shops on the southern side, between Howe Street and the Ponsonby reservoir. The rejort stated that a change had taken place in the attitude of the shopping public to the standard of service required, and a shop-front and interior layout that served 15 years ago was not satisfactory to-day. Some traders had realised this and had modernised their stores and improved their methods of presenting their goods to this public. They were convinced that the advantages were many, and out of all proportion to the srciall cost involved. It had been estimated! if every shop-front on the road were modernised and the interest on th» cost passed on to the tenants, the nverage cost to the tenants would be only Is 9d a week. By participating in the scheme, property owners would not only be making Karangahape ißoad a more pleasant place in which, to shop, but would be preparing to reap the advantage of the imminent trade revival. Moreover, they would help in a very practical way to hasten the revival by creating employment for a large number of tradesmen.
