ESCAPE OF AIRMAN
ENGINE BURSTS IN MID-AIR An amazing escape from an aeroplane crash was recalled yesterday by the arrival at Auckland on the Aorangi of Mr. D. Collins, a well-known Australian airman. Mr. Collins was recently piloting a machine in Australia when the engine, exploded in mid-air. He managed to glide his machine to earth, and both lie and his passenger escaped uninjured. Mr. Collins' most recent flight was made from Perth to the Eastern States carrying newspaper photographs and cinematograph films of the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester at Fremantle. With calls at Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, he covered a distance of about 2500 miles in just on 23 hours, establishing several records <!n route. He was flying Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's Percival Gull machine. • Accompanied by his wife, Mr. Collins intends to visit England shortly to purchase an aeroplane for Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Wvlie, of Sydney, who also were passengers on the Aorangi yesterday.
