He is owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, of Sydney. Miss Nottava, by Chief Ruler from Nottava, owned by the Now South Wales studmaster Mr. G. N. Magill, won the Sydney Handicap, li miles, at Randwick. Sir Simper, by Grand Knight from Simper, is owned by Mr. W. T. Hazlett, of Invercargill, and has scored four victories in succession, including a brilliant win in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield last Saturday. He is one of the prime favourites for tho race Hall Mark is a notable scratching. He defeated Chatham and Kogilla in the Caulfield Stakes last Saturday, and the cablo message published yesterday morning stated that he was likely to start in the Caulfield Cup. Apparently he is being kept for the Melbourne Cup, which ho won last year. Silver Ring had a 51b. penalty for his Epsom Handicap win at Randwick, bringing his weight to 9.7. The fact that he has been scratched also for the Melbourne' Cup suggests that perhaps all is not well with him, although it may be that be is being reserved for shorter distances. The top-weight, Rogilla, won tho Caulfield Cup in 1932. MELBOURNE TURF NEWS MOONEE VALLEY ACCEPTORS (Received October 15. 7.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 15 The New Zealander Silver Ring has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The three-year-old colt Hark Sky, ■\vlio ran third in the A.J.C. Derby, moved short in his work on the track to-day. Time, 2m 3335, a race record. / RETAINER REFUSED OFFER TO GORDON RICHARDS The cablegram last month stating that the champion jockey Gordon Richards had accepted a retainer from the Aga Khan of ,£7OOO a year, plus 10 per cent of prizemoney, was wrong. Richards rejected the offer. A writer in the Daily Telegraph, London, says;— The Aga Khan's offer to Richards was a prodigious one, and one by which he would probably .have earned not less than £15,000 a year. And I understand that he was offered a three years' contract! The Aga Khan's turf prospects are so brilliant at the moment, thanks to his wonderful string of high-class young ■ horses, that it would be possible for a jockey of Richards' calibre to win as much as £20,000 a year.: , Richards' loyalty to Darling's stable Ib one of the most pleasant features of modern racing. Richards and Darling are a great partnership. When a yqar ago somebody dubbed Richards the £2t),000-a-year jockey, he made it clear that if the estimate of his earnings were halved, ,it would still be an exlravagtmt one ' » TROTTING DERBY HORSES THREE ENGAGED AT EPSOM Three Great Northern Trotting Derby horses, Proletarian, Kewpie's Crest and Munga Tangi, will race at Epsom next Saturday, and their displays will bo followed .with interest. Of tho trio, the best form has been displayed by Proletarian, who has been twice placed in four starts. Kewpie's Crest t has ha-d the benefit of racing experience, and is making satisfactory progress, but Munga Tangi has started only once, when he made a pleasing showing. His latest track efforts have not been attractive, but he may make some progress with racing. Other Auckland candidates in the Derby, Bonny Azure. Superfine and High Noon, who*is trained at Addington. have not yet raced. Bonny Azure is trained by F. J. Smith and is a very promising filly by Blue Mountain King—Bonnie Bingen, while Superfine, a full-sister to Te Kalui and Nellota and half-sister to Pegaway, is trained by L. McMahon at Whangarei. High Noon, by Great Parrish from Bequest, is owned by a lodal »atron of J, S. Shaw's stable. Grace McElwyn, jt recent winner, is another Derby candidate owned in Auckland, belonging to Mrs. D. R. RevelL Several South Island three-year-olds are also engaged, including Gamble and Subsidy, who are likely to bo good favourites.
