BOER WAR SOUVENIR

BUGLE FROM RUBBISH HEAP FIRST CONTINGENT'S BATTLES Picked up in a Waimate auction mart in a somewhat dilapidated condition, a bugle, 'which was often heard by the men of the Ist New Zealand Contingent in the South African War from 1899 to 1902, was viewed with considerable interest at the annual reunion of the South Canterbury branch of the South African War Veterans' Association in Timaru. , The acting-secretary of the association, Mr. W. Haymaii, said that the bugle had, after being purchased at auction by Mr. It. Moore, of Waimate, been handed to Mr. S. Malthus, a past-president the association. It had been cleanea and polished. Engraved on it were the names of the different engagements. in which the Ist Contingent had figured in South Africa. The future home of the bugle would be in the War Museum in Wellington, the authorities of which, regarded it as one of their most valued trophies*. Mr. Moore, who was present by invitation, deserved the thanks of the association for handing the trophy over, as all members realised its sentimental value. Mr. D. Fraser (Waimate) endorsed the remarks of Mr. Hayman, and said that before reaching the auction mart the bugle had been picked up on a rubbish heap.
