IMPORTED ONIONS
Sir, —"Storekeeper's" letter in Friday's Herald, headed Imported Onions, calls for a reply. "Storekeeper" states he is called upon to remind everyone concerned that last year when Canadian onions were not brought down, the price of Pukekohe onions jumped from 10s 6d to 25s per cwt. in almost a day. I am of the opinion that his memory must be defective, as last year onions never reached that price. He must be at least 12 months wrong in his statement. Before comparing Melbourne onion prices, I would advise "Storekeeper" to find out the difference between Victoria and New Zealand in the price of land, local rates and taxes, and if ho is satisfied, then to try growing a few acres of onions, say for a period of three to five years. He will then be more competent to advise "everybody concerned." Should he decide on trying the experiment of growing at the Melbourne price, I would strongly advise him to buy his farm as cheaply as possible, and to have at least £IOOO capital. Otherwise he will not reach the fifth year. Pukekohe Onion Grower.
