The progenitor of the ram was a short-legged animal bred in Norway. On the chance of belonging to a breed of similar Cheviots, one of these rams was sent to the Storrs agricultural station in Connecticut, where breeding of the short-legged creatures began. The Cambridge School of Agriculture then decided to mate tho new variety with Suffolk-cross ewes, believing that thus they will produce perfect legs of mutton, succulent and tender, short and thick, with little knuckle to dry up in cooking. POTATOES IN SYDNEY •' HIGHEST PRICE SINCE 1929 Prices of potatoes in Sydney are higher than they have been sinco 1929. Last week agents advanced wholesale prices by as much as £5 a ton. Tho well-known Tasmanian Brownell was selling at £lB a ton, while new potatoes from the North Coast were being disposed of at £23 and £24 a ton. These prices wero the highest recorded since 1929, when over £3O was obtained for Tasmanian potatoes. A firm market is usual in Sydney at this time of tho year, when Tasmanian supplies are dwindling. It is not expected that the shortage will bo acute.
