BANK OF NEW ZEALAND

ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDING The 73rd anniversary of the founding of the Bank of New Zealand, the first bank opened in the country of New Zealand origin, to-day. Credit for the establishment of the bank belongs to a group of business men in Auckland, and the first branch was opened here on October 16, 1861, the Wellington branch being opened the following year. From a small beginning the bank, which was incorporated by Act of Parliament, and had at first a capital of £500,000, and disclosed assets of £555,970, in the first balance-sheet, soon became an institution of great national importance. In spito of adversities toward the end of last century, the bank has continued to expand, and its assets on March 31, 1931, were £54,356,787.
