MEAT FOR HOSPITAL
POSITION AT WHANGARE:I BOARD ACCEPTS A TENDER [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Monday Only one tender for meat supplies for the hospital was received al; the last meeting of . the Whangarei Hospital Board. It was from tho Whangarei Master Butchers' Association and was not accepted, as the board considered the prices much too high. The House Committee was empowered to make arrangements for the supply ojf meat. At to-day's meeting of the board a' letter was received from the Master Butchers' Association stating that the discount of 7% per Cent shown in the association's alternative tender submitted last montir. was an error and should have read, "current shop prices, less a discount of 10 per cent, usual monthly settlements." The letter further asked for permission to amend the tender .accordingly and stated that responsibility for supply rested upon a member of the association. Tho chairman, Mr. J. N. McCarroll, said that since the last meeting he had interviewed the secretary of the association and told hiim the position that had arisen meant driving 'business outside the town, which the board did not wish. There were two alternatives, calling for fresh tenders for a shorter period or accepting the association's terms and giving each butcher in the association a three-monthly term instead of confining the business to one butcher. Finally tho board decided to accept the amended alternative tender of tho Master Butchers' Association.
