She and her husband live at Cap herrat, but have lately been visiting London, where they have been entertaining in honour ot their only daughter. The medal "Ingenio et Arti" lias been conferred upon Gyrithe Lemche, the well-known Danish writer who has for manv years taken a leading part in the woman's movement. Gyrithe Lemche is the first Danish writer of prose who has been thus honoured, the only two other Danish owners of the medal being the poets, Axel Juel and Seedorff Pedersen. Of a light chestnut colour, this precious lock was recently taken to a London salon to be washed and arranged on the little yellowish scrap of paper on which its historv is written. Immediately after washing, the lock curled up naturally. The Woodhill Tennis Club, Waimauku, held a dance 011 Saturday evening to celebrate the opening of the tennis season. There was a very large attendance, visitors being present from Waikoukou Valley, Waimauku, Kunieu, Helcnsville and Kaukapakapa. Streamers in the club's colours (blue and white) decorated the hall. Jhe Gaiety Orchestra supplied the music and extras were played by Miss Joan Phillipps. Messrs. F. Hoist Phillipps were in charge of the floor arrangements. The October meeting of the Kohimarama - Mission Bay Progressive League, at which Mrs. Grant presided, was a particularly interesting one. The league's patron, Miss A. H. Basten, was present and spoke on her recent trip to Honolulu to attend the PanPacific Conference. Miss Rothwell, an Australian delegate to the conference, was also a visitor, and gave a brief account of her impressions of Honolulu. A travel talk was given by Mrs. H. Brown, and Miss Debenham, accompanied by Mrs. Cragg, played a violin solo. Miss Gwen Hughes, of Melbourne, whose skill in combining art with modern cooking secured for her a good business contract in England some months ago, recently won great praise at Bournemouth, where she has established her "theatrical kitchen." Her playlet "Let's Have a Party" was preceded by a tableau vivant called "King Alfred Burns the Cakes." Then Miss Hughes demonstrated to the audience how a wide range of supper delicacies could be cooked with a pennyworth of "■as! Miss Hughes, who learned domestic science in Melbourne, is now a playwright, an actress and an expert cook, and may claim to be the inventor of "dramatised cookery."
