SPEEDING PAST SCHOOL
DANGER TO CHILDREN COMPLAINT AT MANUREWA A complaint of traffic speeding excessively in the vicinity ot the local school was made by the Manurewa School Committee in a letter to the Manurewa Town Board last evening. The school committee requested th« Town Board to co-operate with other local bodies in strictly enforcing traffic by-laws. It also protested against racing cyclists. The" clerk, Mr. H. Kav, said the traffic inspector had had the main road steadily under surveillance and he had repeatedly taken action. Mr. .T. H. Edwards said he thought the position of the War Memorial near the school gates created a danger, as the children's vision of the road was obscured by it. Unless it wore moved there were possibilities of accidents and the school committee was seriously concerned about the matter. The chairman, Mr. W. T. Cox, said there had been no accidents during the years the memorial had stood in its present position. There were practically no racing cyclists on the road during school hours. Saturday afternoon was the usual cycling time. Mr. H. R. Maxwell suggested that the Hill Road gateway bo used instead of the corner one. He opposed removing the memorial, as schools had been chosen as the most appropriate sites in all localities. .After further discussion a suggestion bv Mr. E. Pegler that "Safety first" notices be erected in the school grounds by the school committee was adopted.
