LORD BLEDISLOE

SIXTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY CAKE AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE CUT WITH ENTHUSIASM "YOUTH NEVER BEEN LOST" [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, celebrated his 67th birthday to-day. Reference to His Excellency's birthday was made by the president of the Wellington branch of the Overseas League, Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice, in welcoming Lord Bledisloe and Lady Bledisloe to a meeting of the league to-night. In wishing Lord Bledisloe "Many happy returns of the day," Sir Michael said: "I hope the Governor-General will not mind me saying that I read with astonishment a newspaper statement of His Excellency that he had renewed

his youth through his association with New Zealand. But with respect may I ask how that could be renewed which never has been lost?"

Lord Bledisloe, replying, said he had hoped the knowledge of his birthday, even among members of his household, would be forgotten, but that day, on the table of Government* House, where a party of English schoolgirls were entertained, was a large sugar, cake, which His Excellency had cut with juvenile enthusiasm. His only relief was that the cake was not covered with candles, because that would have given the whole story away.
