WINDSOR CASTLE
" The Romance of Windsor Castle," by Mr. Hector Bolitho, is a by-product of the activity that has enriched biography with his books about Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort. A mere booklet in comparison with them, it nevertheless has charm and value; " 110 more than a notebook," says its author, but in it he tells much of tho story of the old historic structure with which he has become on good terms during recent years. The personal note is often struck, in keeping with his intimacy, yet the chequered career of the famous old castle and its surroundings is dominant. The story, which begins in Norman times and is still being written in events of Royal home and court, takes a pleasant ramble through the centuries. It explains some things not met on the beaten track of school work. Its very avoidance of routine narration gives it charm. By the time it is finished the reader understands why Mr. Bolitho's more pretentious books of historical biography are anything but catalogues of events. He succeeds in passing on the appeal old Windsor and the older Thames made seven years ago to himself. " The Romance of Windsor Castle." by Hector Bolitho. (Evans Brothers, Limited, London.)
