Dr. Orchard, formerly of the King's Weigh House, author of " From Faith to Faith," and "The Inevitable Cross," has finished a new hook, " The Way of Simplicity." The Earl of Athlone says he thinks that modern inventions have done something to render flabby the writing muscle. The up-to-date author would be aghast at the thought of the manual labour involved in Charles Dickens' works, where every word was written and every correction made in the novelist's own hand. The late Mr. John Galsworthy renounced in favour of the poor of Budapest all royalties duo to him from the sale of the Hungarian translations of his works. It is reported that between the beginning of December and the end of March over 215,000 people received help, mostly in the form of free meals, from this source. Neil H. Swanson, author of " The Judas Tree," etc., in an interview with the Bookseller, says that his hobby for the last twenty years has been digging out exciting moments in American history, and that he has made notes for his next seventeen books. Tho latest outcome of these searchings is " The Phantom Emperor," the story of a forgotten American super-man, published by Putnam's.
