A SLIMMING CLIMB

The Monument, built by Wren at the city end of London Bridge to commemorate the Great Fire, receives a huge crowd to climb its 311 stone steps on Bank Holidays. Its average income from sightieers is £IOOO a year, representing 80,000 visitors. Women, say the attendants, are mostly good climbers. They seldom give up. Many of them take the exercise for slimming. Some office workers, too, climb the spiral stairs twice and three times a. week to keep themselves fit. The record is held by a Tilbury parson, who has been climbing the steps daily for years.
