MOTHER AND WIFE
MAN'S DRAMATIC TRIBUTE A handsome—almost dramatic—tribute to his mother and his wife was paid recently by Mr. Peter Lee, of Durham, who, at the Miners' Federation conference in Edinburgh, was honoured on his relinquishing the office of president under the age limit. Mr. Lee was presented with a gold watch and Mrs. Lee with a brooch and pendant. Of his wife he said: " She took a big risk when she first threw in her lot with me. You should have seen me then —a man in the rough, with no education —and a drunkard. I stand here to-day as president of your great organisation because of the love of two women —my mother and my wife.
" For over 46 years Mrs. Lee and I have been travelling happily together, though on a somewhat rough road. Amid all the strife and struggle of public life I have always found peace at home. I can truthfully say that my own fireside has been a great help to me in life."
