LADIES' GOLF

DOMINION championship PLAY IN FIRST ROUND . NO UNEXPECTED RESULTS SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDERS The first round of the New Zealand ladies' Golf Championship was played at Titirangi yesterday in i*?rfect weather. 'A light south-westerly wind made play" interesting, and the dry conditions gave plenty' of run to the ball, but made pitched approach shots difficult. The fact that a number of the best players had drawn a bye, including the Australians, Miss Bailey and Miss MacLeod, and Miss Kay and Miss Gaisford, robbed the first round of some of its interest. The spectators gave most of their attention to the match between Mrs. Clive Robinson, the Australian champion. and Mrs. Dodgshun, and were treated to some fine golf, with the putting of the visitor the chief contributing factor to her victory. The other Australians, Miss Lascelles and Miss Joan Hammond, had easy wins. Nine of the other sixteen matches were won bv local players, and there were no surprise resplts. An Australian success was the winning of the stroke handicap in the senior division by Miss Mona MacLeod. SOME EASY WINS CHAMPIONS IN FORM THREE SCORES IN SEVENTIES Only four of the matches in the championship went to the last hole, and a number were won • by substantial margins. The best score of the first round was that of Miss Joan Hammond. the New South Wales champion, who, in beating Mrs. I. Rota, of Hawera by 7 and 6, completed the course in 78, her card reading:— Out: 4553 5 544 4—39 In: 53654444 4 39 Two other scores in the 70's were returned during the day, both in the Coronation medal. Miss O. Ste\ens, of North Shore, completed the round in 78, including three sixes, which were balanced by four threes. Her card read: — '. . ' Out: 45435634 o 39 In: 5-46436 3 4 4 39

The next best score was that of the former Australian champion, Mjss Mona MacLeod, who, in a round of 79, did a number of brilliant boles, particularly a fine three at the last. Her score was as follows: — Out: 44545544 5—40 In: 43654455 3 —39 Mrs. Dodgshun's Good Tight The meeting of Mrs. Clive Robinson and Mrs. Dodgshun, which was expected to provide a close finish, eventually went to the Australian champion on the 17th green. Both players took several holes to settle down, Mrs. Dodgshun losing the first by weak putting, but making matters even at the third, where, after a superb drive, Mrs. Robinson approached short into a bunker and failed to recover, her opponent at that stage having taken 4 to reach the green. A 3 at the short fourth wave Mrs. Robinson the lead. After two fine shots by both players at the fifth the Australian holed a long putt for a 4 to become 2 up. Mrs. Dodgshun drove too far at the sixth and found a bad lie in the gully, losing the hole to a 5. Bold shots to the short seventh put both players near the pin, but Mrs. Robinson was on the bank of the green, and by good putting her opponent reduced the lead to 2. The eighth was halved in s's after Mrs Robinson had found the hunker to the right of the green with her second, but she again used her putter effectively on the ninth to get a 4 and turn 3 iip, having done the outward half in 41, which included a 7. Mrs. Dodgshun made heavy work of the tenth, and lost to a 5. At the Redan Mrs. Dodgshun put her tee shot nicely on for what looked like <v certain 3/ while her opponent was bolow the bunkers guarding the green. Mrs. Robinson played boldly to the "back of the green and then holed a lift, putt downhill. Mrs. Dodgshun over-putted and took 4 to become 5 down. At the long 12th, Mrs. Robinson, after a chapter of accidents, gave up, and orthodox s's at the Wrecker brought the score to 4 up and 5 to play. Both played short at the 14th and Mrs. Robinson became dormv 4. When Mrs. Dodgshun won the next two in excellent 4's it looked as if the match might still go to the 18th, after two indifferent shots at the 17th. Mrs. Robinson played a great approach to make certain of a half and the match. Miss Barns-Graham Wins

Another attractive match was that between Miss Barns-Graham and the Titirangi player, Mrs. J. C. Finlav, who got an early lead, hut, once having been headed at the sixth, could make no impression on her opponent. Mrs. Finlay won the first in 3, and Miss BarnsGraham the third in a birdie 3, while the next was also halved in 3's. The turn came with the score 1 up in favour of Miss Barns-Graham, who won the next two and played well to maintain lier lead to the end. Miss M. Ward, of Wellington, and Miss 0.: Stevens both had hard matches which were finally settled on the 18th green, while Miss K. Hanson, of Miramar. won comfortably against her f •hristchurch opponent, Miss J. Stevenson Mrs. Trevor Lean, of Pupuke, and Mrs G. H. Clark, of New Plymouth, both plaved a good long game, hut nutted indifferently in a match that wont to the Inst hole in favour of the Pupuke player. A close match between Miss M Stevens and Miss E. M. Upton was in doubt to the last hole, where the former, who was dormy. made doubly certain of the match with a win. Long Drives Successful^ Mrs. Deighton made full use of her local knowledge in an easy win o\ er Miss N Grace, and by her long driving Miss P. Helean, of Wanganut, outclassed her Maimgakiekie opponent, Mrs. H. V. Johnston. Miss Helean nearlv drove the first and eighth holes and at the 10th hit a drive that gave lier a chip on to the green. The Titirangi player, Miss B. Hill, aided by excellent control o\er all her shots, beat Miss Holmes, of Shirley, after a close game, and Mrs. .Alison, of Titirangi, was too good for Miss James, of Masterton. . Auckland Golf Club players figured prominently in the next three matches Mrs. Buttle beating Mrs. Preston, of \karana, bv 3 and 2. and Mrs. Ferguson and Mrs. J. M. Wilson having comfortable wins in their matches over Mrs. G. McMillan and Miss B. Rutherford respectively. Mrs. Ferguson reached the turn in 40, with a seven in her card, getting an eagle at the second against the wind. In the last two matches Mrs. H. Grace had a good win over Mrs. A. R. Abbott, and the Australian, Miss Lascelles, was much too* good for her Hamilton opponent, Mrs. Batt. and qualified to meet a member of her team, Miss Bailey, to-day.
