PETROL TAX REFUND
CONCESSION TO LAUNCHMEN OBJECTION TO WITHDRAWAL The following remit from the Bay of Islands Harbour Board will be submitted to the conference of harbour boards to be held in Christchurch next month: "That this conference of harbour boards' place before the Government the desirability of the petrol tax refunded to launch-owners being allocated to harbour boards, particularly as private launches use, without any charge, all facilities provided." At a meeting of the Bay of Islands Launchmen's Association this week a protest was voiced against the proposal contained in the remit. It was stated that there were over 30 surveyed launches in the Bay of Islands. Their owners paid to the Government a survey fee and to the harbour board a mooring fee and passenger licence fee. If they lost the refund on petrol tax some of them would be put out of business. The others would have to levy an extra charge on tourists, which would be detrimental to the industry. A petK tion was circulated among the launchmen and will be forwarded to Wellington.
