NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
RESIDENT OF ROYAL OAK A well-known resident *of Royal Oak, Mr. Robert Ferguson, of Port Albert Road, celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday. In his youth he assisted in. constructing the first railway line i/i Otago, from Dunedin to Port Chal'mers, in 1868. Mr. Ferguson was born at Cookstown, near Belfast, Ireland, in 1844, and reached Port Chalmers in the clipper ship Edward P. Bouverie, commanded by Captain Tilly, after a passage of 104 days. For a time he was employed on a farm on the Taieri Plains and, after working on the new railway line, he took up farming in the Oamaru district. He then travelled abroad, and returned to Ireland. Ho was occupied in farming until about 20 years ago, when, with his wifo and family of four sons and four daughters, he arrived in Auckland, taking up residence at Epsom. Mr. Ferguson is interested in gardening, and for his age is remarkably active. His faculties are but little impaired, and, although he has spectacles, he prefers to read without them. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson celebrated their golden wedding three years ago.
