FOG OVER HARBOUR

VESSELS LEAVE PORT _ CITY AND SUBURBS AFFECTED I Fog covered portions of the city and suburbs late last night, but on the harbour and in the Hauraki Gulf it was not sufficiently thick to interfere with the departure of the steamers Marama and Canopus. Although at times it was not possible to see across the harbour, the fog was patchy. The Marama, which left for Sydney at about 11.30, was informed by signals from Mount Victoria of the presence of fog in the Rangitoto Channel, but it was not sufficiently serious to hinder the steamer's progress. A report from Tiritiri Island stated that there was no fog there, although the atmosphere was hazy. The Canopus left for Westport about a quarter of an hour after the Marama and followed her out. The fog approached from the east at about 11 O clock m a calm atmosphere. However, visibility on the harbour was good until midnight, and consequently terry traffic was not hampered. After midnight, however, the fog became more dense. In low-lying suburban districts the fog was noticeable, but in higher areas there was only a light mist.
