VICTORY yFOR NORTH TEAM FIVE GAMES AGAINST THREE MISS KAY'S NARROW MARGIN The 38th annual New Zealand ladies' golf championship tournament was commenced at the Titirangi links yesterday in beautifully fine weather, with a southerly breeze tempering the rays of the sun. The \yind was not of sufficient strength, however, to affect the scoring, which, taken all round, was a little disappointing. The eouflse and greens were in fast condition. The main contest yesterday was that between teams representing the North and South Islands, the former winning for the fifth year in succession by five patches to three. The maU'h between Misses Kay and Gaisford was a keen and interesting one. Miss Kay was twice 3 up, but Miss Gaisford squared the match at the 17th, only to play the last badly and lose by one. Following were the results of the niatches: — Mrs. Dodgshun (Dunedin) beat Miss P. Helean (Wanganui), 3 and 2. Miss V. Fleming (Christchlurch) beat Jliss W. Barns-Graham (Gisborne), 1 up.

The first round of matches in the New Zealand ladies' championship will be played to-day, commencing at 9 a.m. Some of the leading players, including Miss Kay, Miss Gaisford, Miss Fleming, Miss Curtis and Mrs. Stout, New Zealand, and Miss MacLeod and Miss Bailey, Australia, have drawn byes in the first round and will not play until to-morrow. All, however, will take / part in the coronation medal match to be played to-day.. There should be some interesting contests in the first round of the championship. The Australians, Miss J. Hammond, Mrs. C. Robinson and Miss Lascelles, have been drawn against Mrs. J. C. Fir.lay, Mrs. Dodgshun and Mrs. W. G. Batt respectively.
