COOK COUNTY FINANCES

CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT BETTER RATE PAYMENTS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Thursday A considerable improvement in the county finances was reported at a meeting yesterday of the Cook County. Council. It was stated that there was a credit balance at the bank of £2325, compared with a debit balance of £19,000 on the same date two years ago. This satisfactory position was stated to be the result of the large percentage of rates which had been paid in time to secure discount, and also to the collection of a large sum of rato arrears.

Slightly more than half the rates levied for the current year were paid within a month, while arrears collected since March 31 amounted to £3833.
