DEATH OF SEABIRDS
OIL WASTE FROM SHIPS MUSEUM COUNCIL'S CONCERN The destruction of seabird life and the supply of fish food by the discharge of oil from ships is viewed with concen by the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum. At a meeting of the council yesterday referance was made to a statement by the Minister of Marine, the Hon. j. G. Cobbe, in the House of Representatives recently, to the effect that the Government had been advised that there was at present no constitutional power to enact legislation to prevent the discharge of oil from vessels outside territorial waters. The question, however, had engaged the attention of the British and other Governments, with a view to completing an international agreement. The council passed a resolution expressing the hope that an international solution would be found. The urgency of the matter was no doubt well known to the Minister, and instances of the scourge in New Zealand waters were known to the council. In addition, it was decided to write to the League of Nations asking for information on the subject.
