AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS

PROGRESS TOWARD RECOVERY EQUALISING BUTTER PRICES [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday An optimistic view of conditions in Australia was expressed* by Mr. Dynes Fulton, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, on his return to Hamilton -to-day, after a visit to Sydney. Mr. Fulton said Australia was making good headway toward recovery, and everyone seemed satisfied with the progress made. The result of the election was a foregone conclusion, and the Government appeared to have given entire satisfaction. It was frank and open with the electors. The equalisation scheme had been a valuable assistance to dairy farmers. Butter was sold at 1408 a cwt. in Australia, the receipts being paid into a pool and equalised with the export realisations. The same price was paid to all factories. The Australian dairyman was thus far bettor off than the dairyman in New Zealand, and as a result of the equalisation scheme, he was in a better position to handle the Eastern trade. Australia possessed direct shipping with the East and was able to undercut New Zealand prices. Mr. Fulton said building in Sydney was very active, and the whole citv had the appearance of prosperity. The conditions formed a striking contrast to what he observed thertf two years aigo.
