STEAMER'S LUCKY ESCAPE

Tho sound of gunfire from the Goodwin Sands startled holiday-makers at Deal recently. Boatmen ran to man the motor-boats still ashore, and big crowds gathered on the beach. It was then learned that the South Goodwin lightship had fired a gun to warn a large stoamer which suddenly loomed out of the haze and was steaming direct for the lightship. Tho steamer just managed to steer clear both of the lightship and of the treacherous sands.
