TEST FOR WAIKATO COAL
SHIPMENT FOR ENGLAND A consignment of 50 tons of Waikato coal in 16 400-gallon steel tan&s containing water is to be loaded on to the Opawa before the vessel sails for London, this afternoon. The coal, which is being shipped by Waikato Carbonisation, Limited, is being sent to Corby, England, in connection with the investigation being made by Pacifio • Steel, Limited, into the feasibility of | establishing steel worls in New Zear land to use the iron deposits at Onokaka, Golc.en Bay, Nelson. Furnaces are available at Corby to test whether Waikato lignite coal 'is| suitable for making metallurgical coke by a new process, for burning in blast-.. furnaces. A consignment of 25 tonj. of .; Kaitangata coal has been shipped from Dunedin by the Wingatui for transhipment to the Akaroa lit Auckland, to ; be sent to England for similar tests. The coal is carried in tanks containing ; water to prevent chßmical change*; taking plaoa during the voyage to England. _
