LADIES' HOCKEY

KIWI SENIOR CHAMPIONS The senior and junior championships of the Auckland Ladies' "Hockey Association were brought to a close on Saturday. In the , junior grade there are still.two series of matches in the championship to be decided. The knockout championship games will commence in the senior .and intermediate grades next Saturday. The Kiwi-Wesley senior match was the better of the two played, being more, open and fast. Throughout the first half there was plenty pf nice passing on the part of bpth elevens. Wesley did not play *up to its usual standard and over-eagerness when near the circle lost it many good chances of scoring, although Miss Grace, goalkeeper . for Kiwi, was in good form. The Kiwi forwards played bard hockey and combined well throughout. Miss Francis was the outstanding forward, scoring three of Kiwi's total of four goals and making many nice attacks. Miss Graham was prominent in the halves. For Wesley, Miss White played k good defensive game. Miss Garrard, in the halves, was outstanding, while Misses Clark and Rossiter were tho best forwards. At half-time the score was 2—-1 in Kiwi's favour, but after the resumption Kiwi soon got the better of the contest. Misses Francis and Bathgate each added one goal to the total, securing for Kiwi one more victory and making it assured champions in the senior grade for one more year.' Ngaro showed to better advantage than Technical for the greater part of the first half. The Ngaro players kept their positions well and sent the ball about to good ypurpose. The Technical players were inclined to bunch too much and this gave Ngaro an advantage. When half-time came Ngaro led 2—l, i\lrs, Jones having netted two goals to Technical's one by Miss Muffins. After the interval, Technical soon asserted itself. With better positional play and good passing rushes on the part of Misses McConnell and Mullins, ably assisted by Miss Spinks and supported by the halves, Technical was not long in scoring two more goals, whereas Ngaro did not find the net again. For Ngaro, Mrs. Jones and Miss Fletcher, well supported by Miss Braes, were the outstanding forwards. The halves played soundly early in the game, although they appeared to stay back too far in the second half. The defence was 1 not quite as good as usual. For Technical Misses Mullins, McConnell and Spinks were tho pick. Miss Aldiss did good work in the halves and Miss Garret made few mistakes in goal.
