CHALLENGE FOR SHIELD - AUCKLAND'S DECISIVE WIN MANAWATU. TEAM FAILS - . In the poorest exhibition of representative hockey given at Rerauera this season Auckland successfully defended the New Zealand Challenge Shield against Manawatu on Saturday, winning easily by seven goals to nil. The game was scrappy throughout, the challengers being below shield standard, and the only really outstanding feature of the game was the performance of the three inside Auckland forwards, C. Watts, E. Watts and P. Floyd. Auckland was superior throughout the game and the visitors' seldom looked dangerous, being hampered by the around, which,' although dry and fact for the first time this season, was very bumpy, and caused the ball to bounce erratically. A weakness in the wings, .who found difficulty in adapting themselves to the conditions, lost several opportunities, for Manawatu. Several .passes, • which should have gained considerable, ground tor the visitor's, went astray in this manner. Their defence, too, could not withstand the .repeated Auckland assaults. ". ?

The Auckland team did not give its usual exhibition, and its showing was inferior to that in the match against Wellington* two weeks ago. The teams were:— y.
