CONFIDENCE TRICK

VARIATION OF FRAUD STAMP AND VALUELESS CHEQUE By a clever variation in confidence tricks a number of Victorian sportsmen have been robbed of sums ranging from £25 down, the latest victim being a bookmaker. The confidence man's ruse was made possible by obtaining a cheque book and a rubber stamp belonging to a suburban swimming club. Ringing up the Victorian Club and representing himself to be a leading trainer, he hold the bookmaker for whom he asked that he was expecting a cheque for £25 from a suburban swimming club, and inquired if a letter had been addressed to him there. There was ono. On being asked to open the letter, the bookmaker found it contained a chequet for £25 drawn on a suburban bank. The bookmaker agreed to cash the cheque and pay it over to another trainer, who, he was informed, would send for it in due course. A boy in tho uniform of one of tho city messenger services arrived at the Victorian Club and obtained the money. But the bank dishonoured the cheque presented by the bookmaker.
