UNSETTLED CONDITIONS HEAVY SHOWERS AT TIMES The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, was as follows: —A deep depression is now centred near the Chatham Islands. Pressure is rather low also to the north-east. An intense anti-cyclone is located over Tasmania and extends toward southern New Zealand. The indications are for. southerly winds, moderate to strong generally and in places reaching gale force. Seas are becoming rather rough to rough generally. In the eastern Tasman Sea, strong southerly winds to gales and rough seas. The weather will improve gradually in western districts, but elsewhere it will still he cold and cloudy with heavy at times, snow on the ranges of the South Island and hail in places. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST COLD AND CHANGEABLE The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last night the following special weather forecast for the Auckland Province: —Strong southwesterly to southerly winds, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. The weather will be cold and changeable with passing showers. Seas rough on the west coast and becoming rather rough on the east. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—The weather was wintry and wet yesterday, frequent showers, being experienced during the morning and evening. The fresh south-west wind which was blowing during the day moderated to a light breeze in the evening, but the conditions continued unsettled and threatening. The barometer continued low last night, having been practically steady at 29.65 in. for 38 hours. The thermometer registered 50 degrees at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Two points of rain had fallen up to 4 p.m. Christchurch.—The weather was cold and showery with a blustering southwesterly wind, which increased to gale force this evening. The barometer evening was rising at 29.75 in. Dunedin.—A boisterous south-westerlv gale accompanied by heavy rain and snow on the surrounding hills was experienced. Conditions were very cold the thermometer registering 38 grees at 8 a.m., while the maximum temperature for the dav was 41 degrees. The barometer last evenine had risen to 29.90 in. " "
